"A Novel Idea" is the second segment of the seventeenth episode of The Loud House.

It is Take Your Daughter to Work Day, and Lincoln is bummed out that he does not get to visit the office where Lynn Sr. works (which is apparently a very fun place) like his sisters do. Rita offers to remedy his situation by taking him to hang out at the dental office she works at. She encourages him to have fun while she's busy assisting Dr. Feinstein. However, Lincoln is continually put off by the fact that his dad's office happens to be right across the street, and he can see the fun his sisters are having over there. He then notices there is an arcade nearby and, after his mom leaves him to hold onto her notebook for her, he sneaks off to play at the arcade.

When Lincoln returns to the dental office, he realizes that he left Rita's notebook back at the arcade, and he feels really guilty when she mentions that she'd been writing a novel in it for seven years (hence this episode's title). While Rita's still busy at work, Lincoln rushes back to the arcade to retrieve the notebook, but finds that it is already in the trash and being loaded into a garbage truck. He gives chase after the notebook, being pulled by a horse while riding his roller skates and going through a street cleaner, a hot dog stand and a construction site, before getting his feet stuck in wet cement when he finally gets the notebook, which is in pretty bad shape by that point. Unfortunately, when he brings the notebook back to his mom, it crumbles into dust, and he confesses the truth to her. Fortunately, Rita forgives him, saying that she felt the novel she was writing was actually rather dull, and his adventure in trying to get it back has inspired a new novel for her to write.

  • It is revealed in this episode that Mrs. Loud's first name is Rita.
