David the Gnome

From Nickelodeon

Jump to: navigation, search

The World of David the Gnome was an animated television series based on the world-famous children's books The Gnomes and The Secret of the Gnomes, by Dutch authors Rien Poortvliet and Wil Huygen, this European import was relatively unchanged when it came to the States. The voices were now American (including Tom Bosley best known to many Americans as Happy Days' Mr. Cunningham), but the enchanted tales of the Gnome family and their enemies, the Trolls, retained their animation style, which resembled the lush illustrations of the original books.

David, the patriarch of the Gnome clan, was something of a pacifist, since he usually avoided trouble rather than put up a fight. This wasn't an attitude of cowardice, but rather a faith in Gnome and Troll-kind. He was convinced that goodness would eventually prevail, and he was determined to do his part.

This 26-episode series came to the U.S. airwaves in 1987, running weekdays on Nickelodeon, and was later rebroadcast in 1996 on The Learning Channel. It was narrated by Christopher Plummer, of The Sound of Music and The Insider fame.
