Dennis' full face revealed in his final confrontation.

Dennis the Hitman (mainly known as Dennis) is a murderous bounty hunter hired by Sheldon J. Plankton to kill SpongeBob and Patrick to prevent them from retrieving King Neptune's crown in the animated film The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie.

History[]

Dennis is first seen inspecting some left behind sesame seeds from the Patty Wagon and the two gasoline workers made fun of his hat. Annoyed by this, he literally pulls their mouths off before resuming his search for SpongeBob and Patrick.

Later in the film, Dennis arrived at the Thug Tug and inspected a puddle of soap and learned of SpongeBob and Patrick's presence in the area through a bubble blown from the soap, getting confronted by the owner and patrons of the Thug Tug, who considered anyone that blows bubbles as babies that they beat up per bar rules. However, as they state this rule, Dennis easily punches the Thug Tug owner all the way to the bar so hard that the ship sank upon impact. The bounty hunter then continued his hunt for SpongeBob and Patrick.

Shortly after, he was driving through the bones of the victims of a giant frogfish that also tried to eat SpongeBob and Patrick, crushing a skull with his bare hand in the process.

By the time SpongeBob and Patrick crossed the Monster Abyss, they encounter Dennis for the first time during the middle of their journey. He pulls off the fake mustaches given to them by Neptune's daughter Princess Mindy that they'd been wearing, calling the duo out on their stupidity on the obviously fake mustaches. When SpongeBob asks why Dennis wants to kill him and Patrick, Dennis explains Plankton hired him to do so, and in his overconfidence, accidentally reveals to his victims that Plankton was the one who stole the crown and sent it to Shell City (much to his embarrassment). However, before Dennis can step on them, he is crushed by the Cyclops Diver's "bigger boot". After escaping Shell City, when David Hasselhoff is giving SpongeBob and Patrick a ride back to Bikini Bottom, the duo see the Cyclops Diver's boot somehow swimming up to them. As it turns out, Dennis survived being squished by the Diver and has caught up to them. Determined to finish the job, Dennis attempts to crush SpongeBob and Patrick with his cleated boot once again, but he is ultimately knocked off by a catamaran and falls back into the sea, never to be seen again, though his fate remains uncertain.

Personality[]

Dennis is portrayed as a fearmongering and homicidal sadist who never shows mercy towards his targets. He is a vituperative and bloodthirsty assassin who supposedly tries to kill SpongeBob and Patrick and prevent them from bringing the crown back to King Neptune. Despite this, he is apparently willing to let his victims go if they are able to bribe him such as when he grabs SpongeBob's money and says "It's gonna take a lot more than five...", which shows that he is willing to let them go but it is unknown what the exact amount is because he noticed that SpongeBob gave him Goofy Goober Dollars which are obviously not currency. He can also get embarrassed when he overexplains the plot of his motives such as when he accidentally revealed that Plankton was the one who stole the crown. He is murderous since he says "Dennis always gets his man!", which implies that Dennis successfully killed all of his previous victims. Despite his sadism, Dennis sometimes presents himself as a professional. Not only is he willing to spare his targets if they pay him an unknown sum of money, but he is somewhat affable when having no anger. However, he generally only does this because as a hitman, he must present himself as a normal being to avoid detection. He proves that he is more than willing to murder (or at least severely injure) people who aren't his targets if they cross him.

Appearance[]

Dennis is a tall and slender barracuda who has olive green skin. He usually wears black cowboy-type hat, a gray shirt, a black vest with the word "DENNIS" on his back, a pair of silver shoulder pauldrons, a right-hand fingerless spiked glove, a pair of black sunglasses, a red neckerchief which covers his mouth, black trousers, a dark gray utility belt with a skull symbol, and a pair of black boots with spikes underneath. After Dennis removes himself from the Cyclops Diver's boot, his glasses and neckerchief are broken and torn, revealing that his eyes have black irises, and his mouth has sharp and pointy teeth. His appearance was inspired by various motorbike gang members.

Trivia[]

  • He later made a non-physical cameo on a wanted poster in the episode "Call the Cops".
  • A sand cowboy resembling Dennis (but without the sunglasses) was among the sand warriors in SpongeBob's sand army in "Sand Castles in the Sand".
  • He returns meeting with Plankton on-screen in the episode "Captain Pipsqueak" where he is among the bad guys auditioning for a part in the League of Villains.
