"Arnold's Valentine" Vintage Promo Hey Arnold! The Splat

"Arnold's Valentine" is the 25th episode of Hey Arnold!, and also the series' Valentine's Day episode.

Synopsis[]

On Saint Valentine's Day, the students in Miss Slovak's class are assigned to make Valentine cards. Helga attempts to write one for Arnold, but cannot find the right words. She then overhears Arnold writing a Valentine card for Ruth, asking her to meet him at Chez Pierre tonight, though he signs it anonymously, despite Gerald advising him not to. Miss Slovak then starts handing out postcards from the students' pen-pals, but before she can give Arnold a letter from his pen-pal, Cecile, the bell rings for recess. During recess, while Arnold slips his card for Ruth in with her other Valentine cards, Helga gets an idea on how she can express her feelings to Arnold. She sneaks into the classroom and takes out Cecile's letter for Arnold, adding a postscript saying that she wants to meet him at Chez Paris tonight.

When Arnold reads the letter, he becomes worried as to how he's supposed to go on two dates at the same time. Gerald suggests that, since the two restaurants are right next to each other, he should simply get a table at both places. Arnold agrees to this plan, and then admits to Gerald that, despite his crush on Ruth, he actually doesn't know much about her. Meanwhile, Helga prepares to disguise herself as Cecile by listening to tapes about learning to speak French and getting her hair done at a salon (not realizing the salon is actually meant for dogs).

Arnold and Helga's candlelit dinner

Arnold and "Cecile" (Helga) at Chez Paris.

That evening, when Helga, as "Cecile", arrives at Chez Paris, Arnold is surprised to see that she looks nothing like her photos and questions her American-sounding accent. "Cecile" asks Arnold if there's any girls he's interested in, leading Arnold to talk about how Helga constantly bugs him. "Cecile" tells him that perhaps there's a reason she does that, but Arnold doesn't quite believe that. When he sees Ruth arriving at Chez Pierre next door, Arnold starts dashing back and forth between the restaurants. As he does, Ruth mistakenly believes him to be a busboy, and when he finally does spend some time with her, he becomes bored by Ruth constantly taking about herself. Upon returning to Chez Paris, Arnold admits to "Cecile" that he's had a crush on a girl whom he recently learned he really had nothing in common with. "Cecile" points out that maybe this girl he's referring to (Ruth) probably isn't the one for him. Taking "Cecile's" words to heart, Arnold goes out to resolve his situation and finds Ruth having sparked a conversation with an actual busboy she has a lot in common with.

Helga, however, sees Arnold conversing with Ruth out the window, not realizing that Ruth is leaving with the busboy. She goes out and confronts Arnold, saying that she cannot stand someone who's not honest about who they are. Just then, the real Cecile shows up, having arrived with her parents to visit Arnold. As Arnold is confused about there being two Ceciles, Gerald saves him by pretending to be Arnold himself and taking Cecile out for hamburgers. Arnold then asks the fake Cecile who she really is, but she tells him that she can't answer. Arnold, however, admits that he did have a really good time with her and they bid each other farewell. The episode ends on Helga at first being happy to know that Arnold likes her, only to then question if it's the real her that he likes.
