Breaking the fourth wall is a comedy device used in fictional stories in which a character acknowledges the fact that they are a character in a movie or television show, and are actually aware of being such.

There are several ways of breaking the fourth wall; examples include when a character refers to a particular part in a movie or television episode, when a character stops others from performing an occult or criminal act by referring to the fact that it is a "children's movie/show," when a character responds to a real world person who is not physically present (such as the narrator), or when a character talks directly to the viewer.

Originally, Nick had a policy against breaking the fourth wall in any form, but they dropped it after a few years. The only policy they have against fourth wall breaking now is that the characters cannot acknowledge that their show is ending in the final episode, much like what The Angry Beavers did for their last unmade episode "Bye Bye Beavers", which Nickelodeon refused to air due to breaking the policy.

Nicktoons

Doug

• "Doug to the Rescue" - While using his Quail Eye on Klotzilla, Quailman looks to the camera and says, "Kids, don't try this at home!"
• "Doug vs. The Klotzoid Zombies" - While using his quail whistle to break the TV and snapping Quaildog out of it, Quailman says to the camera, "Remember, kids, the Quail Call is not a toy!"
• "Doug Battles the Rulemeister" - While speed-reading through the Rulemeister's rulebook, Quailman says to the camera, "Remember, kids, reading is fundamental!"

Rugrats

• "The Blizzard" - After seeing the Abominable Snowman, Angelica tells the viewers "He lives down here, you know!"
• "Pickles vs. Pickles" - Angelica winks at the viewers and tells them "Works every time!"
• "Ghost Story" - Chuckie tells the viewers "Tellin' scary stories is fun!"

The Ren & Stimpy Show

• "Big House Blues" - At the beginning, Ren objects when the narrator mispronounces his surname.
• "Marooned" - When Ren says that they're marooned, Stimpy adds, "Just like the title of this cartoon!"
• "Haunted House" - When the ghost reveals himself to Ren and Stimpy, he says "I've been trying to scare you throughout this entire picture."
• "A Yard Too Far" - Before he and Stimpy can go after the pie on the windowsill, Ren says "I've seen cartoons like this before."

Rocko's Modern Life

• "I Have No Son!" - Rocko, Filburt, and the tour guide enter the storyboard room. The person going through the storyboards says "Then Rocko, Filburt, and a Rhino guy come into the..." and then sees said characters in the storyboard room only to have the tour guide sheepishly reply "Wrong show."
• "Tickled Pinky" - Paula Hutchison is aware that the lightning bolts coming out of Rocko indicate pain and that he needs relief, which is indicated by blue wavy lines in this episode.
• "To Heck and Back" - Heffer questions on why Heck isn't called the hell, Peaches covers his mouth and says "Censors!" while looking at the camera.
• "Fortune Cookie" - During the destruction scene, the O-Town scene of the opening theme to the show is shown, but there are many differences. Rocko, Spunky, and Heffer are not shown running, Filburt is just smiling instead of grinning, the Chameleon Brothers have switched places, Bev looks to the left rather than at the toaster, Slippy the Slug is not shown at all, and the theme song is played at the beginning of the theme rather than at the end.
• "Frog's Best Friend" - Ed Bighead calls Earl poorly drawn.

Hey Arnold!

• "Phoebe's Little Problem" - Mr. Simmons says "what do you say we join the class and the rest of the school and forget about what just happened and put this little episode behind us forever? Let’s move on and make a brand new fart."

The Angry Beavers

• "Bye Bye Beavers" - The series' unproduced final episode was to be about Norbert and Daggett acknowledging the fact that they were cartoon characters and that their series was ending and would continue to be shown in reruns for years.

CatDog

• "Dog Gone" - When Cat is having his nervous breakdown, Dog looks at the camera confused and says nothing.
• "Fan Mail" - CatDog breaks the fourth wall by getting ready to read some fan mail.
• "Spaced Out" - Cat broke the fourth wall by trying to escape from the movie but Rancid Rabbit told Cat that the viewers loved the movie.
• "Rich Shriek, Pooh Shriek" - Shriek's dad broke the fourth wall when he said "This is more fun then popcorn night in prison".
• "The Ballad of Ol' 159" - Dog introduces himself and tells the viewers the story about the garbage truck.
• "Fred the Flying Fish" - Rancid broke the fourth wall when he said "The shows over kids". He actually said that when the episode ended and was the last line said by anyone in the episode.

Oh Yeah! Cartoons

• Whenever a short ends, one of the characters from the same shorts they appear would say "Oh Yeah! Cartoons".
  • "What is Funny?" - Slap T. Pooch breaks the fourth wall throughout the episode to the viewers on what is funny'
  • "Jelly's Day" - Jelly looks at the viewers and says, Why does this have to do with my big mouth?
  • "Mind the Baby, Jamal" - Jamal breaks the fourth wall 3 times where he tells the audience admitted that his sister Polly is sort-of cute in a tadpole way. then when he tells them that he is now stuck at home babysitting his sister. and at the end of the episode, he tells the audience goodnight.
  • "Hobart: The Weedkeeper" - Hobart tells the viewers he's going to leave a puppy for his girlfriend Okra and she needed it, so she doesn't have to walk her toaster anymore.
  • "Pete Patrick, P.I." -

• "Tea at the Treedome" - SpongeBob looks at the camera and points back at Sandy, currently wrestling a clam, and explains she is in trouble to the viewer.
• "Naughty Nautical Neighbors" - Patrick speaks to the viewer after saving Squidward from choking on his fork.
• "Pizza Delivery," - when SpongeBob chastises Squidward during the storm, all action comes to a brief halt, then resumes, as if paused.
• "Home Sweet Pineapple" - when SpongeBob turns the whole screen upside down, Patrick slides off. He falls back down when SpongeBob turns the whole screen back up.
• “Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy” In the end, SpongeBob gives a thumbs up and winks at the viewers.
• "Jellyfish Jam" - SpongeBob speaks directly to the viewer while in disguise at the start. He also mimics the French Narrator while eating bread with jellyfish jelly.
• "Nature Pants" - Squidward says that he will give SpongeBob eleven minutes before he returned to civilization. Eleven minutes is the average length of most episodes, including this one. Later, at the end, SpongeBob faces the camera saying "It is great to be home!"
• "F.U.N." - when Mr. Krabs looks through the telescope, it can see the background that was applied to the screen when SpongeBob and Plankton spell out "fun."
• "SB-129" - While Squidward is in Nowhere, he looks directly at the camera and says "I gotta get outta here!"
  • Squidward turns his head towards the camera after SpongeBob and Patrick responded to his question about who invented jellyfishing in the first place saying "You are, Squidward." (Squidward earlier showed SpongeBob and Patrick's earliest ancestors how to catch a jellyfish safely due to them catching it with their bare hands only to get stung).
• "Karate Choppers" - Mr. Krabs looks at the camera after he says "I love money-ay!"
• "The Paper" - when SpongeBob plays "Mary Had a Little Lamb" on his piece of paper, Squidward acknowledges the sheet music that appears in the background.
• "Dying for Pie" - SpongeBob says "hello" to Mr. Krabs in Squidward's flashback bubble and he runs off crying when he sees SpongeBob is still alive.
• "Prehibernation Week" - SpongeBob acknowledges and reacts to every time the extreme music of Pantera plays.
• "Christmas Who?" - when Patchy cuts Potty's strings to make him fall, a puppeteer controlling him falls down from the ceiling to the ground.
• "Life of Crime" - Patrick questions the possibility of having a fire underwater.
• "Your Shoe's Untied" - In an attempt to find somebody to help him tie his shoes, SpongeBob asks Painty the Pirate, the talking painting seen at the beginning of the intro.
• In "No Free Rides," SpongeBob and Mrs. Puff inadvertently hit the French narrator and the camera in a boatmobile.
• "Pressure" - When SpongeBob and Sandy are looking at the clouds before racing up the mountain to see who's better at everything, SpongeBob says the clouds look like a flower. Sandy corrects him saying they all look like flowers, all the time.When SpongeBob asks the seagull if he knows Sandy Cheeks, the seagull turns to the camera.
• "Welcome to the Chum Bucket" - Following the song "This Grill is Not a Home", Plankton says, "All these tears? And the show tunes?" He also says to the audience, "I put the brain in the robot, you know."* In "Survival of the Idiots," when Patrick is dizzy and showing "dizzy clouds" of chicken/turkey drumsticks, he points to them and says "Hot Wings!"
• "I'm with Stupid" - SpongeBob states that Patrick is too busy having an episode, referencing the fact that they're in a TV episode.
• "Krusty Krab Training Video" - Patrick seems to acknowledge the narrator, though he thinks the ceiling is talking and nobody else seems to directly address the narrator's existence.
• "Wet Painters" - Patrick is seen holding one of the time cards. He even tells SpongeBob to move along because he is all out of them.
• "Party Pooper Pants" - SpongeBob sees a letter from Patchy the Pirate, a character known to address the audience. After SpongeBob and Sandy do some karate in the final song, the screen cracks.
• "Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy V"- after the TV narrator introduces the IJLSA, he quickly adds "A subsidiary of Viacom," which is the company that owns Nickelodeon.
• "New Student Starfish" - SpongeBob looks at the audience while asking where he is after reading a message on his desk. Later, while SpongeBob is in detention with Patrick, Patrick glares at the camera. SpongeBob then looks at the audience while complaining that in one day, he's gone from good noodle to bad egg.
• "Clams" - Mr. Krabs breaks the fourth wall by acknowledging the dramatic music while SpongeBob reels his dollar in, an ostinato in D minor, played in 4/4.He then opens a double-door on the boat, which reveals an orchestra playing the same music.
  • Right after Old Bluelip swims away with Mr. Krabs' one-millionth dollar, a two second close-up shot of Mr. Krabs' eyes is shown as he gathers tears. It nearly looks like he is glaring into the camera.
  • Later, when he uses them as bait, SpongeBob and Squidward question why the clam would appear then when it would not before. The camera pans to Mr. Krabs dressed as a conductor in front of the orchestra, revealing that it is the ominous background music that draws the clam's attention.
• "Mid-Life Crustacean" - Mr. Krabs looked directly to the audience and says "Every-time is all topsy-turvy now!".
• "Ugh," Patchy tipped over on his dinosaur, resulting in the camera crew coming in to stand him back up.
• "I Had an Accident", the family at the end of the episode looks at each other with disgust and confusion, then turns off the show.
• "Krabby Land", SpongeBob notes on how his activities at home had gotten no acknowledgment when he mentions "Gee, I wonder what Mr. Krabs has been up to since I saw him last and then went home to do nothing of particular interest 'til this very moment" before his speech is cut off.
• "Missing Identity" - When Patrick stops laughing, he says, "Sorry, people," referring to the audience.
  • Not Betty says, "You've managed to kill eleven minutes," referring to the length of the episode.
  • SpongeBob looks at the viewers two times. He first does it when Patrick says "could I have another hint?", and again at the end when Not Betty tells SpongeBob that she is borrowing Betty's work shirt. Both are references to Jack Benny.
• "The Sponge Who Could Fly" - when SpongeBob gets chased off a cliff and in and out of a mud truck by a mob over his dream to fly, he tells the audience "Well it can't get any worse.". When he lands in the feather delivery truck shortly afterwards and gets covered in feathers (referring to getting tarred, feathered, and (literally) driven out of town), he looks at the audience and says "I guess I spoke too soon."
• "Pranks a Lot" - Mr. Krabs talks to and shows the viewers his items of defense against ghosts.
• "Fear of a Krabby Patty" - a transition appears indicating a long period of time with random objects floating by. Old Man Walker questions why he is floating.
• "The Lost Mattress" - Squidward says "Oh, that figures." to the camera.
• "Krabs vs. Plankton" - SpongeBob hums the SpongeBob Closing Theme when strolling towards Mr. Krabs' office.
• "Have You Seen This Snail" - the Nickelodeon logo is seen on the Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy Paddle Ball Set's box.
• "New Leaf" - when the screen fades to black, Plankton appears and tells the viewer that it was all a scheme to get the formula.
• "All That Glitters" - SpongeBob tells the viewers "All that glitters, is not gold." This also referenced the episode's title.
• "Born to Be Wild" - In order to get to Bikini Bottom before the bikers do, SpongeBob says "I'd better take the shortcut!" and uses the scene transition to arrive at the Krusty Krab, surprising Mr. Krabs.
• "Bummer Vacation" - When getting stuck in the toilet, SpongeBob asks the viewers if one of them could help him get out.
• "Friend or Foe" - young Mr. Krabs and Plankton say that they can hear Old Man Jenkins' theme song, meaning that they can hear the background music since Old Man Jenkins isn't seen playing an instrument.
• "Money Talks":
  • Squidward questions where the music is coming from, and nobody is seen with instruments.
  • The Flying Dutchman looks directly at the camera/audience when saying "Try saying that one three times fast."
• "SpongeBob vs. The Patty Gadget" - Squidward gets annoyed at the fact Patchy said he had bad face acne, suggesting Squidward can hear the narration.
• "The Krusty Sponge" - Mr. Krabs says "I love a happy ending" at the end of the episode.
• "Atlantis SquarePantis" - at the bottom of the title screen of the Germ Warrior game, it says "Copyright Nickelodeon 1991."
• "Pat No Pay" - when Patrick is suffering from Krabby Patty withdrawal, SpongeBob says he needs a patty, or else he'll keep mumbling about it for the next 3^1/2 minutes. This is referring to the approximate amount of time remaining in that episode, which altogether is four minutes long.
• "Mermaid Man vs. SpongeBob" - Plankton turns to the audience after removing the label and reveals his Mind Control Shampoo to them.
• "20,000 Patties Under the Sea" - the monster looks at the screen saying "Now that looks like dessert to me." Also near the end of the episode, Mr. Krabs looks at the viewers with an upset face when he realizes SpongeBob and Patrick let his money go.
• "The Two Faces of Squidward": Squidward talks directly to the audience when welcoming up to the Krusty Krab. He later tells the viewers to remind him to fire his therapist.
• "Banned in Bikini Bottom" - at the beginning of the episode, Squidward stares directly at the camera.
• "Stanley S. SquarePants" - after Stanley destroys his television, SpongeBob says to the camera "There was nothing on anyway.
• "Penny Foolish" - Mr. Krabs speaks to the viewer after SpongeBob picks up the "penny".
• "Slide Whistle Stooges" Squidward hides his naked body from view, as if he knows he is being watched, even though he is at home.
• "Shuffleboarding" - Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy introduce themselves to the TV audience.
• "Overbooked" - Sandy makes an annoyed face at the screen, then crosses over the split-screen to yell at SpongeBob during their call.
• "Truth or Square" - after Squidward says he's never fallen asleep on duty, Mr. Krabs reminds him to not give him a flashback, right before a flashback begins. Also, later on, Mr. Krabs talks to Plankton through a flashback.
• "Stuck in the Wringer" - after SpongeBob and Patrick melt the glue that was dried on the wringer with tears, SpongeBob looks at the screen and talks directly to the viewers, saying "I guess crying does solve your problems after all.
• "SpongeBob's Last Stand" - When Mr. Krabs wants to know when the approval of the Shelly Superhighway was passed, Plankton responds, "Observe in this conveniently timed flashback." Mr. Krabs hums the theme song when he cleans the tables.
• "The Bad Guy Club for Villains" the end credits of the lost episode are the same as the ones that play after every episode of the show.
• "A Day Without Tears" - as SpongeBob cries over the song on the radio, Squidward talks directly to the viewer. A little later, he states he has "edited flashbacks together" of SpongeBob crying.
• "Drive Thru" - one of Pearl's friends screamed in Squidward's ear with a megaphone. Squidward holds his ear in pain, looks at the screen and talks directly to the viewers, saying "I'm not faking it, y'know. That really hurt... a lot." When Plankton goes up to the drive-thru, he tells the viewers his plan.
• "A Friendly Game" - the French Narrator states "What follows is a brief construction montage." and "We hope you enjoyed this brief construction montage." A card reading "Brief Construction Montage" also appears.
• "Ghoul Fools" - in The Void, when Squidward finds out his torture, he says, "I guess this is the part where I start screaming," implying that he's telling the audience what happens next.
• "The Way of the Sponge" - when Sandy comes up with an idea, she looks at the screen and talks directly to the viewers, stating what her idea was. The fourth wall is also broken when Fuzzy Acorns asks who she was talking to.
• "Planet of the Jellyfish" - after the Jellien Leader's victims are thawed from the Krusty Krab freezer, Mr. Krabs asks why they're covered in goo. The French Narrator then proceeds to read an "11 Minutes Later" time card, followed by SpongeBob finishing his story on the Jelliens, once again referencing the 11-minute runtime of an average SpongeBob episode.
• "Hello Bikini Bottom!" - during "Never Give Up", Squidward and SpongeBob mention at one point that it's the part where they play.
• "It Came from Goo Lagoon" - Plankton wipes the goo off the window so the viewer can see what he is reading.
• "Plankton's Pet" - Plankton breaks the fourth wall by shouting, "Holy plot twist!" when Spot brings him a Krabby Patty.
• "Séance Shméance" - Patrick says "This is the part of the story where I run around screaming."
• "Kenny the Cat" - shortly after SpongeBob discovers that Kenny was a fake, he looks directly at the camera and tells the viewers that he should probably seek help in getting through his depression over Kenny's fraud.
• "Lost in Bikini Bottom" -Squidward is drawing his 'distance between two points' example on the screen. Once he realizes he doesn't understand what he's talking about, he scrambles the drawn lines and throws them into the air, resulting in SpongeBob tasting them and enjoying their strawberry flavor.
• "The Executive Treatment" - a time card reading "Montage" appears.
• "Company Picnic" - at a certain point, SpongeBob acknowledges the fact that he is in a slow-motion scene.
• "Pull Up a Barrel" - in Mr. Krabs' story, after Captain Scarfish tells Mr. Krabs that he has a cargo hold full of suntan lotion, and right before Squidward laughs at Mr. Krabs in the present, Captain Scarfish and Mr. Krabs look at the screen for a split second.
• "Patrick! The Game" - at the end, Patrick says to the viewers "Game Over."
• "SpongeBob LongPants" - when SpongeBob gets his driver's license, she says while looking at the audience, "Oh, oh! Lock your doors. Bar your windows. It's the end of the world!" Also, at the end, Mrs. Puff knows that SpongeBob's driving license had been revoked and therefore says "Oh, I don't know what that was about."
• "Two Thumbs Down" - SpongeBob and Patrick's thumbs launch in the air like fireworks, and form "The End," signaling the end of the episode.
• "CopyBob DittoPants" - Plankton says, "All the Sponge copies will fade away now."
• "Lame and Fortune" - Ivy plays a riff on the piano after it falls on his legs.
• "Goodbye, Krabby Patty?" - Squidward's resume shows he has been a cashier at the Krusty Krab for 17 years, which is how many years SpongeBob has been on the air since the airing of "Goodbye, Krabby Patty?"
• "Bulletin Board" - patty meat splatters on the screen when SpongeBob chops them up.
• "Snail Mail" - the narrator says "What did I tell you?" when SpongeBob discovers the mix-up in the letter. Also, the airplane SpongeBob and Patrick are flying in stops when it runs out of gas just before it hits the ground and remains suspended mid-flight. Patrick refuels the gas tank, and the plane continues and smashes into the ground.
• "Salsa Imbecilicus" - Karen plays a laugh track all the times when Plankton gets humiliated.
• "Mutiny on the Krusty" - when Mr. Krabs is fighting the sea monster, the customers dance to the "Jungle Baby" track.
• "Juice Man" short - at the end, SpongeBob winks at the viewer.
• "Whirly Brains" - At the end of the episode, Squidward tells the viewers the Martians are coming and that they're next.
• "Mimic Madness" - SpongeBob imitates the French Narrator.
• "House Worming" - Plankton asks the viewer if they got his joke. Also, the short ends with the worm indicating to the viewer that he'll reside with SpongeBob.
• "Life Insurance" - Gunther Fitz sticks his hand out of SpongeBob's TV for SpongeBob to sign the Life Insurance (contract).
• "Trident Trouble" - Four people narrate the story. later, When they say "That's what we've been trying to tell you," SpongeBob replies, "Not helping." meaning that he was aware of them narrating the story
• "The Incredible Shrinking Sponge" - when Mr. Krabs thinks of how SpongeBob could be a personal hygienist, a sign appears in his thought bubble. He then grabs it and blows the bubble away from the screen.
• "The Getaway" - the police officers tells the audience at the end of the episode to drive safely and always wear your seat belt.
• "Patrick's Coupon" - Nancy Suzy Fish makes a reference to SpongeBob SquarePants being a kids cartoon when she says "Looks like some sort of kids cartoon" after acknowledging that Patrick was on the ground. The minute Mr. Krabs says that he knows the weight of a coupon, Patrick's coupon becomes somewhat heavy. The ice-cream SpongeBob and Patrick dive into splashes on the screen, stating "the end."
• "Feral Friends" - Sandy communicates to the French Narrator.
• "No Pictures Please" - Squidward opens and looks out of a flower in the sky, probably being aware that the sky is just a backdrop put up to mask out the water reflection.
• "Krabby Patty Creature Feature" - Patrick, who is still a Krabby Patty zombie, pulls a part of himself and tells the viewers to "have some" before the episode ended.
• "Cave Dwelling Sponge" - At the very end, Perch Perkins reports, "Life in Bikini Bottom returns to normal, if only for this episode." Spongy Spongy then smashes his club into the camera, ending the episode.
• "Bunny Hunt" - the Bunny Wunny plays "Puka A" on his ukulele.
• "Squid Noir" - Squidward asks SpongeBob to stop interrupting his narration for a scene.
• "Pat the Horse" - SpongeBob says "Horsey? That's not right." to the viewers.
• “Chatterbox Gary” - Squidward gets yelled at to answer the door by the person on the show he’s watching "Old Man Patrick" - SpongeBob sings the theme song to help Patrick remember who he is. • "My Leg!" - when SpongeBob's flashback with him running over Fred's leg fades away, SpongeBob wiggles his body along with the fading and says "flashbacks tickle". Also, the ending transition breaks Fred's leg.
• "Ink Lemonade" - the episode ends with Squidward spraying ink on the screen, making it black.
• "Mustard O' Mine" - when SpongeBob says "unaccompanied minors," one of the kids plays a rim shot on the drums.
• "Shopping List" - Plankton speaks to the viewer a few times when he's in the yeti crab's cave.
• "Patnocchio" - Karen introduces the story to the viewer. Also, Plankton interacts with the light bulbs above his and Patrick's heads. Thirdly, Pearl speaks to the viewer in the commercial parody. Finally, Karen addresses the viewer as she wraps up the story.
• "Library Cards" - as Patrick absorbs knowledge, SpongeBob drums along to the background music. Also, at the end of the episode when Patrick throws a book in SpongeBob's mouth, SpongeBob turns to the camera to show "The End" on the cover.

After Chip as a full grown ATM is seen messing with Mr. Krabs by constantly swiping his withdrawn money away, Plankton tells the viewers "That's my boy!" at the very end of the episode.
• "Jolly Lodgers" - when Squidward asks the boat salesperson if he is the manager of the hotel, he says "No, I just play one on TV," referring to his one time role as a hotel manager in the episode.
• "SpongeBob's Big Birthday Blowout" - The French narrator is seen holding the "One little boost to the surface later..." time card, and everyone in the tour bus says bye to him. At the end of the episode when SpongeBob is telling his age to Patrick, static interrupts him and he plays his nose like a flute and the T.V. screen shuts off.

Also, SpongeBob only needs one five-minute break every twenty years, which is a reference to the fact that the show was celebrating its twentieth anniversary in the year that this episode premiered.
• "Boss for a Day" - the worker fish tells the viewers "Hey, a penny!" right before he starts going after the rolling penny Mr. Krabs was after.
