"Graveyard Shift" is the first segment of the 36th episode of SpongeBob SquarePants. It and "Club SpongeBob" were notably the first SpongeBob episodes to be released directly to video before airing on television, being included on the Nautical Nonsense and Sponge Buddies VHS tapes and DVD.

Synopsis[]

Squidward is getting ready to head home for the night when Tom suddenly shows up, wanting to place an order despite it being closing time. Sensing that he could be making more money if the Krusty Krab stayed open later, Mr. Krabs declares the restaurant is now open 24 hours a day, and then leaves SpongeBob and Squidward to run the night shift. SpongeBob delights in doing all of his usual work activity at night at first, until Squidward tells him to go take out the trash. SpongeBob is reluctant to go outside at night, but does so, screaming in panic all the way. Squidward then decides to give SpongeBob a good scare by telling him the story of the Hash-Slinging Slasher.

According to Squidward's story, the Slasher was once an ordinary, clumsy fry cook who used to work at the Krusty Krab, but then one night accidentally cut off his own hand (Squidward has to specify that this guy wasn't a sponge and couldn't grow another arm) and replaced it with a rusty spatula, and he was then hit by a bus and fired at his own funeral. Every Tuesday night, the Slasher rises from the grave and returns to the Krusty Krab and kills anyone who gets in his way; his entrance is heralded by the lights flickering on and off and then the phone ringing with no one on the other end before the Slasher shows up in the ghost of the bus that ran him over. This story scares SpongeBob out of his wits, and Squidward gets a good laugh out of this at first. However, when he becomes annoyed by SpongeBob's constant screaming in fear, he admits to him that the story is all made up (which then causes SpongeBob to start laughing in the same fashion).

Later that night, no one else is at the Krusty Krab. SpongeBob is mopping the ceiling, and Squidward is questioning Mr. Krabs' idiotic decision to keep the restaurant open this late (not knowing of Patrick waiting till 3 AM to have a Krabby Patty). Suddenly, the lights start flickering on and off, despite neither SpongeBob or Squidward being anywhere the lightswitch. The phone then rings, and when Squidward answers it, there is no one on the other end. SpongeBob thinks Squidward is just pranking him again, but Squidward insists he's not doing anything. A bus then comes by outside, and suddenly someone who appears to have a spatula for a hand comes out. This leads Squidward and eventually SpongeBob to believe that the Hash-Slinging Slasher is real, and they cower in fear as the figure enters the building. However, it turns out it's just an ordinary fish wanting to apply for a job here; he'd called on the phone earlier, but changed his mind and decided to apply in person. Squidward then asks, if this fish was the one calling on the phone earlier, who was messing with the lights; it is then revealed that Count Orlok from Nosferatu was the one messing with the lights.
