Fire Lord Ozai (also known as Phoenix King Ozai, or simply Ozai) is the main antagonist of Avatar: The Last Airbender. He is overall the supreme antagonist of the series due to being in control of the Fire Nation and being the father of Zuko and Azula. He also appears as Aang's nemesis.
Biography[]
Ozai is the younger son of Fire Lord Azulon, and the younger brother of Iroh; his grandfather was Sozin, the Fire Lord who started the 100 year war, and led the genocide of the Air Nomads. According to Iroh, the two brothers had a strained relationship due to Ozai's hot temper. Ozai was married to Ursa, the granddaughter of Avatar Roku, in the hopes of starting a powerful bloodline of firebenders; they had two children,Zuko and Azula.
Ozai had a strained relationship with Zuko, favoring his younger child Azula over him, because of their shared love for violence and war, which led Zuko to gravitate towards his mother for love and affection. This in turn led Ozai to subject Zuko to physical and emotional maltreatment.
About eight years before Aang's discovery in the ice, Iroh was fighting in the war, in the siege of the Earth Kingdom city Ba Sing Se, but left the conflict after his son, Lu Ten, was killed in conflict. Because Iroh's bloodline ended with Lu Ten, and seeing his abandonment of the siege as a failure, Ozai seized the opportunity to claim the throne, much to Azulon's ire; the Fire Lord ordered his son to kill Zuko to understand Iroh's pain; Ozai, however, had Ursa poison Azulon so he could ascend to the throne, which led to Ursa being exiled and Ozai becoming Fire Lord.
Two years before the events of the series, Zuko spoke out in a war meeting, in which a general planned to sacrifice inexperienced Fire Nation soldiers, which greatly angered Ozai, who ordered his son to fight in an Agni Kai, a fire duel; when Zuko realized he would have to battle his father, he begged for forgiveness, resulting in Ozai disfiguring his son's face, and sending him on a worldwide journey to find the Avatar.
Personality[]
Like all of his ancestors, father and grandfather, Ozai is easily angered, domineering, extremely callous, ruthless, cruel and power-hungry. Ozai is also the complete opposite of his older, peaceful, hedonistic, easy-going, happy and tea-hungry brother. Ozai shows his cruelty towards his eldest child Zuko, abusing him and was displeased with him.
Appearance[]
Ozai is a tall, regal man with a muscular physique, black hair, a thin goatee and golden eyes. He dresses in fine robes of red, black and gold.
