Quote "We choose what holds us back"

Master Splinter is a character from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comics and related media. He is a wise, intelligent mutant rat who trained the four turtles in the art of ninjitsu. A skilled martial arts teacher, he cares for his adopted sons with fierce devotion. In the original comics, as well as the live-action movies and the 2003 animated series, his background story is that he was once an ordinary pet rat who learned ninjitsu by mimicking the movements of his master, Hamato Yoshi. However, some other media, such as the 1987 and 2012 cartoons and Archie Comics' Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adventures comic books, used a different origin story in which Splinter was Hamato Yoshi mutated into a humanoid rat.
