On January 3, 2011, Nickelodeon ordered 26 episodes for a ninth season, which will bring the number of episodes up to 204 and will pass the 200-episode milestone.[21][22] The season premiered with the episodes "Extreme Spots" and "Squirrel Record" on July 21, 2012, and is the first season to make a permanent switch to high definition.

Season 10: TBA

In 2013, it was reported that a tenth season is in production and was expected to air in 2014, but it did not air that year. During this time, the crew members worked on a sequel to The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie that was released in 2015.[40] On December 10, 2014 Paul Tibbitt announced on his Twitter page that Steven Hillenburg would return to work on the show in January 2015.[41] According to a Tweet by Vincent Waller, the production of the tenth season began on Monday, October 12, 2015.[42] There is at least one 22 minute episode special planned for Season 10.[43]
