"Suds" is the second segment of the fifteenth episode of SpongeBob SquarePants.

Synopsis

SpongeBob awakens hungry in the night. While preparing a midnight snack, he leaves the refrigerator open, causing his home to freeze. By morning he has developed the "suds" (an underwater version of the common cold where he expels bubbles whenever he sneezes). SpongeBob refuses to admit he is sick to avoid missing work, but finally gives in and rests. He asks Sandy to take him to the doctor, but is first visited by Patrick.

Patrick convinces SpongeBob that doctors are harbingers of torture and outdated magazines, so SpongeBob allows "Doctor Patrick" to cure him. The insane treatments include making foot sandwiches and congesting his ostia with corks. When Sandy arrives, Patrick rolls SpongeBob away, where Spongebob winds up in front to the Krusty Krab. Spongebob sneezes near the restaurant and destroys it, leaving only the foundation.

Sandy takes SpongeBob to a real doctor, who prescribes the "sponge treatment", which is performed by a live human hand named Hans. This involves being rinsed with soap and used to scrub various objects and people. The treatment cures SpongeBob completely, and he receives a lollipop (which is gigantic). Jealous, Patrick pretends that he has the suds too by quickly blowing a bubble and hiding the soap and wand behind him, but the doctor isn't fooled and as a punishment for impersonating a doctor, Hans gave Patrick a bad treatment and doesn't get a lollipop.

Trivia

  • When SpongeBob rolled to the Krusty Krab, the Chum Bucket doesn't appear. A similar mistake occurred in "Help Wanted" and "Best Day Ever".
  • It is actually illegal to impersonate a doctor like Patrick did, as Sandy suggests. She's right, as it requires doctor insurance and a college-graduated degree. However, Patrick will again impersonate a doctor in "The Splinter".
  • At the beginning of the episode, the viewer can see that there is no path leading to Squidward's house.
  • When the fridge is left open, it freezes SpongeBob's entire house. However, this would actually heat the house, as the heat removed from the inside of the refrigerator is released out the back, along with the extra heat from the motor. The motor could have burnt out if the fridge was left open all night.
  • The music is heard throughout the episode is Tchaikovsky's "Dance of The Sugar-Plum Fairy" from The Nutcracker. The music is also heard in "The Truth of Gold".
  • It is shown in this episode that SpongeBob had a pet scallop.
  • The man taking a shower during the live-action "sponge treatment" is Tom Kenny, who provides the voice of SpongeBob. The same footage of him in the shower is also seen in "Neptune's Spatula".
  • Closed captioning error: When Mr. Krabs counts his money he says "shiny dimes" but in the captioning, it says "shiny tines".
  • When Sandy comes over to check on SpongeBob and Patrick says he's "just fine", Patrick has a clothespin over his nose, even though he doesn't have a nose and cannot smell.
  • The wringer, which will be used in "Stuck in the Wringer" is seen when SpongeBob goes into his bathroom.
  • The Italian version of this episode is censored, removing all of the live action part.
  • SpongeBob will claim his hands are too big for the phone's buttons again in "SpongeHenge".
  • When SpongeBob is cooking Krabby Patties, the stove is not at the order window, in this episode it is close to the pantry. This will also be the same in "Your Shoe's Untied".
  • This episode is referenced again in "The Whelk Attack", when Spongebob says, "After all, I got the Suds."
  • When SpongeBob goes to call Sandy to not take him to the doctor, he goes to the right, but his living room of where he called Sandy is at the left.
  • There's a book called "SpongeBob Goes to the Doctor", but in the book, he wakes up with the Suds, and instead of the Sponge Treatment, he takes some medicine. And, in the end, Patrick doesn't get his "special treatment", he is reading an "old magazine", and he gets scared and runs out of the doctor's office.
  • When Patrick slams the door to remove Spongebob's tooth, a closeup reveals it's a molar, a cube-shaped tooth with a flat surface. However, Spongebob is missing one of his two front teeth, which would be incisors.
