"The Legend of Boo-Kini Bottom" is the 221st episode of SpongeBob SquarePants, and the series' second Halloween special. It is also the second SpongeBob episode to be animated in stop-motion by Screen Novelties, following up "It's a SpongeBob Christmas!" It premiered alongside The Loud House's first Halloween episode, "Tricked!", on October 13, 2017.

Synopsis[]

Halloween has come to Bikini Bottom once again, but SpongeBob, who is dressing as a daisy this year, has put sparkly decorations all over his house. When Patrick, who is dressed as a knight, comes by, SpongeBob admits to him that while he loves Halloween, he can never enjoy it because everything is so scary. Patrick advises his buddy that he doesn't have to be afraid as long as he follows the mantra that "scary equals funny". With that, the two go around Bikini Bottom, checking out what everyone else is doing for Halloween. They first stop at Sandy's Treedome, where Sandy, as "Dr. Frankencheeks", shows them her jars of horrors and an acorn monster. Later, they check out the haunted tours that Mr. Krabs and Plankton have made defaming each other's restaurant.

Meanwhile, in the skies above Bikini Bottom, the Flying Dutchman is enjoying the sounds of terror, but finds himself stymied by SpongeBob's laughter. He descends down to Bikini Bottom and asks SpongeBob what's got him laughing so much. Upon learning what Patrick advised SpongeBob, the Dutchman takes umbrage, but after seeing the Krusty Krab's decorations, figures that everything they've seen tonight is as laughable as SpongeBob says they are. He then treats SpongeBob and Patrick to a thrill ride inside his pirate ship, filled with all sorts of ghosts, ghouls, and monsters who sing a spooky song. Although Patrick is terrified by the sights of the ride, SpongeBob still thinks it's funny, much to the Dutchman's annoyance. He then unleashes a ghostly mist on Bikini Bottom, causing the souls of Gary, Squidward, Sandy, Mr. Krabs, and Plankton to get pulled out of their bodies. Soon after, SpongeBob and Patrick, still on the ride, come to a room where the souls of their friends are trapped in cages. SpongeBob at first still doesn't find this scary... until he sees that the Dutchman has now also stolen and imprisoned Patrick's soul. This sends SpongeBob fleeing in terror, but he eventually stops running and telling himself that he needs to go back and save his friends.

Back on the ship, as the Dutchman is torturing the gang's souls, Plankton frees himself and tries to team up with the Dutchman, saying they can take over the world and split it 70-30. Instead, the Dutchman just turns Plankton into his ghoulish servant. SpongeBob then returns, controlling Sandy's acorn monster puppet, but when he attempts to attack the Dutchman, he instead hits the wall, wrecking the puppet. The Dutchman laughs this off, saying SpongeBob is too stupid to scare him, but Plankton mentions that he once went inside SpongeBob's brain and got pretty scared by what he saw in there. The Dutchman, intrigued by this, goes inside SpongeBob's brain to take a look. Upon doing so, he is unnerved by the silly and annoyingly saccharine dream creatures flying around SpongeBob's mind, including getting a hug from a giant baby version of SpongeBob. It all scares the Dutchman so much that he bolts out of SpongeBob's brain. His ship disappears from the sky, and the souls of SpongeBob's friends (and Plankton) are returned to their bodies. SpongeBob and Patrick agree that they've now learned to never use shortcuts like Patrick's "funny equals scary" theory, to face their fears.
