The Higgenbottom Family

  • Bessie Kajolica Higgenbottom (Amy Poehler) - 9 and 3/4 year old Bessie Higgenbottom is the most ambitious Honeybee scout. As a member of the Honeybees, Bessie wears her uniform every single day, puts a ton of energy and zeal into everything she does, and has earned more Bee Badges than any Honeybee in history. However, she still has thousands of badges to collect, and she doesn’t plan on stopping until she earns every single one. When she needs inspiration, Bessie imagines she is The Mighty Bee, a brave (and buff) superhero whose abilities range from super strength to people skills. Bessie is wildly imaginative, tirelessly overactive, and innocently naïve. At times she seems to be very mature for her age…she reads books like Atlas Shrugged (“Body Rockers”), knows how to work with nuclear fusion (“Artificial Unintelligence”), and is business-savvy (“The Apprentice”). Other times, she’s just a normal kid. She has an imaginary friend, is scared of the doctor (“Bee Patients”), and is a sucker for parties (“Bat Mitzvah Crashers”). Her middle name is cursed and bad things happen to anyone who says it (which created a problem after Portia texted it to everybody in the episode "Name Shame").
  • Happy Walter Higgenbottom (Dee Bradley Baker) - Happy was a nameless, stray dog with a half-torn ear enjoying existence at the Fisherman's Wharf, until Bessie Higgenbottom found him and took him home. Happy could run away from the Higgenbottoms, but he begrudgingly grows to love his new family, except for Ben. Happy may be the type to always have something up his sleeve (he ran an underground canine casino in "Night Howl"), but Bessie loves Happy with all of her heart. Happy has some human traits as well as innate animal characteristics. He can ballroom dance (“Night Howl”) and communicate with those close to him (like Bessie, Ben, and Hippie), but he can’t help but to relentlessly chase the occasional stray cat. He loves both dog food and human food, but is especially fond of bacon. In “Hive Jacked,” it was revealed that he’s a member of the Bacon of the Month club.
  • Benjamin Higgenbottom (Andy Richter) - Bessie's 6-year old brother, Benjamin (usually called Ben) is a bit of a scaredy-cat, but hopes to be Bessie's sidekick when she becomes the Mighty Bee. Though he won’t admit it, Ben feels his sidekick position was compromised when Happy came into the picture, hence Ben and Happy’s unspoken rivalry. As Bessie’s only sibling, Ben tends to get stuck wearing a girly costume (a nurse in “Apoxalypse Now” and a fishnet-clad assistant in “Hat Trick”), but he puts up with it if it’ll help Bessie get a badge. Ben often comes up with ideas when Bessie’s in a jam, but he rarely gets credit for it.
  • Hilary Higgenbottom (Megan Cavanagh) - She is the single mother of Bessie and Benjamin Higgenbottom. She owns and operates a coffee shop called Hilary's Cafe. She can be bowled over by Bessie just as much as everyone else is, but tends to handle her role as a parent in a free-spirited way. She’s always full of good karma and positive energy and lets Bessie and Ben’s imaginations run wild—unless they make a mess in the house or put themselves in danger. Though she can be forgetful at times (in “Apoxalypse Now,” she forgot it was Ben who’s never had the chicken pox, not Bessie), but she’s also displayed high intellect (in "Artificial Unintelligence" she takes apart Bessie's atom smasher).
  • Finger - Bessie's left-hand index finger and imaginary friend. First thing every morning, she draws a smiley face on Finger, and every night before bed, she washes off Finger's "awake" face to put on his "asleep" face. Whenever Bessie needs some worldly advice, she seeks Finger's perspective of the matter. Bessie often restates Finger's imaginary question for others to understand what he is saying. Finger may seem like a figment of Bessie's imagination, but sometimes, it seems as if he has a mind of his own. Finger's French cousin, Finguerre, is evil, and was eliminated by Finger by drowning, his drawn-on face melting in a swimming pool.

  • Penny (Dannah Feinglass) - Penny is 9 and is Bessie's clumsy, sometimes dim-witted, best friend. However, she also shows loyalty to Portia and Gwen and is occasionally torn between them and Bessie. She has a big heart and is always willing to help her friends, whether it be Bessie or Portia. She shared a kindred friendship with Joey the animatronic kangaroo in "Penny Hearts Joey." In "Bee My Baby" Penny is shown to suffer from asthma, and in "Bee Afraid" She becomes possesed when telling scary campfire stories.
  • Mary Francis Gibbons (Sarah Thyre) - She is the Honeybee troop leader and Portia's mom. An advanced social climber, she is banking everything on her mall-pretty daughter. She became a Troop Leader because she plans one day to run for PTA President and she wanted to show how good she was with children. She forced Portia to join the Honeybees and considers the troop a mother-daughter bonding activity. During troop meetings, MF shows blatant favoritism towards Portia and gets frustrated with Bessie because her Honeybee achievements constantly outshine Portia’s. Mary also is a certified Patty Faye Cosmetics (a parody of "Mary Kay" Cosmetics) representative and jumps at any time to push Patty Faye.
  • Portia Gibbons (Grey DeLisle) - Portia is extremely conceited, and she believes she should be waited on and treated like a celebrity. For example, on her 10 1/2 birthday in "Ten Little Honeybees", she demands guests bring her good gifts or they will have to buy new ones, as well as insisting on having ten and a half balloons. She exercises her sense of entitlement on people like Bessie, who she knows would never do anything mean-spirited in return. A stereotypical preteen socialite, she is interested in makeup, clothes, and Rocky (seen on "We Got the Bee"). She typically has Penny (when she is not with Bessie) and right-hand woman Gwen at her side. For an unknown reason, she constantly belittles and attempts to humiliate Bessie, dragging Gwen and Penny into the schemes as well. She often calls Bessie such names like "Messy Stinkinbottom". She talks in a low, scratchy Californian "valley girl" voice. In "Woodward and Beesting" she has laryngitis. In an episode where she discovers her chihuahua is a rat, her overbite curved in on itself as she briefly went insane from the thought of having a pet rat. Though she's cruel at times to Bessie, in "Batmitzvah Crashers" it is shown that she was grateful to Bessie for saving her from her meaner cousin, Chelsea.
  • Gwen (Jessica DiCicco) - Gwen is mainly seen at Portia's side, working as a lieutenant. She’s always equipped with a “witty” comeback, which usually entails calling Bessie a nerd. Her interests include urban culture, music, and fashion. She played the guitar as one of the Pretty Pretty Princesses in “We Got the Bee.” She has a head for business and is very clever. She can be a bit of a bully (especially when it comes to Millie, as seen in “Ten Little Honeybees”), and she’s come to believe that hanging out with dorks like Bessie would ruin her reputation. Her parents have yet to make an appearance in the show, but in "Bee My Baby" she was shown babysitting her five younger brothers.
  • Rocky Rhodes (Kenan Thompson) - He is a 13-year-old skateboarder who works part-time as a waiter at Hilary's Café. In "We Got the Bee," it’s revealed that Portia has a crush on him. Rocky is a budding teen heartthrob: He's nice, cool, and in a rock band. Rocky plays bass for the Integritones, a teen garage band that would totally make it, if they only could find a drummer who would stick around for more than a week. Bessie was the drummer once, but when Penny fainted from stage fright, Bessie quit the Integritones in order to help Portia's band.

[edit] Minor

  • Anton St. Germain (Matt Besser) - First introduced as the Dog Show judge, but has also been shown as the science fair judge and the head of city council. He's a good friend of Mary Frances’, though the integrity of their friendship is unclear. In “So Happy Together,” he accepted a bribe from Mary Frances to let Portia win the Honeybee Dog Show, but in “Artificial Unintelligence” he belittled Portia’s science fair project. He is quite wealthy and owns luxuries such as Persian rugs and a doll museum.
  • Mr. Wu (Keone Young) - He is the owner of a popular Chinese restaurant called Mr. Wu's Restaurant, a neighborhood favorite, located in Chinatown. He is loved by the Higgenbottom family, especially Bessie. He very sweetly humors Bessie in all of her crazy schemes and the Mighty B imagining, often getting pulled in for moral support.
  • The Hippie (Matt Besser) - He is a nameless hippie who roams around town without a care in the world. When he's not painting murals or riding his unicycle, he operates a magic/pawn shop. At times when no other adult will understand Bessie and her friends, the Hippie will, and usually can help in some way. He and Happy seem to be on the same wavelength.
  • Millie (Grey DeLisle) - Millie is the only Honeybee scout with a prominent part in several episodes. She has a slow way of talking, and loves shiny or reflective objects, such as tinsel or confetti. She has a pet turtle named Chester Turtleton. Millie tends to be indifferent or passive about recent happenings and sometimes states the obvious. In "Ten Little Honeybees," she mentioned that she is hypoglycemic.
